The Holiest Temple of Hindu Lord Shiva called Pashupatinath is situated 5 km east of Kathmandu with two tiered golden roof and silver doors of 4 in number, is the holiest Shrines for Hindus.
Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple. Although non Hindus are not allowed inside the temple, you can cross the river beside the temple and view the temple from the hill on the other side. The river beside the temple is called as Bagmati River, the holy river where bathing and burning the dead body is done. Activities that are performed in the temple like puja, arati, avishekh in the promises are directly thrown in the holy river Bagmati River.
Pashupatinath, Lord of animals, is supposed to represent Shiva and the black image inside the temple has four heads. The temple itself is about three centuries old. The big bull, Shiva 's animal ,inside the temple was built in the last century. The best time to visit the temple is on Ekadashi( eleven day after the full moon). On these days there will be many pilgrims and a special ceremony in the evening characterized by the ringing of the bells. In the month of February, there is a big fair at the temple to celebrate Shivas's birthday called Mahashivaratri. Pashupatinath is supposed to be the patron deity of kingdom of Nepal. Important places and temples around the Pashupatinath are, Pashupatinath, Vasuki, Kala Bhairab Gujeshwori temples. From the eastern side of Pashupatinath the sun appear first time in the Kathmandu in the day. Only Hindus are allowed for worship here.
Once the Hindu comes here, he/she will get Darshan of all the four Dham in this Temple. Inside the temple no leather items are allowed. Daily two times a day, pooja is performed in the temple along with mantras and singing bells, etc. This is the temple where we send Rudrakshas for pooja and abishekam before it is sent to customers. This is one of the processes for Rudraksha to get fully energized.
